Last year we got to witness Amanda Bynes’ downward spiral firsthand, via her Twitter. We learned (even before her stunt at the VMA’s) that Miley Cyrus couldn’t keep her tongue in her mouth due to the photos on her Instagram, and Rick Ross tweeted about what a “beautiful country” Africa is (hey, he’s not perfect).
But, on the other side of the spectrum, there are some celebrities who are absolute winners in the social media world. Social media has changed the way we view other people. Twitter and Instagram alone can offer up information about you to everyone from potential employers to new friends. Because social media is updating in nearly real time, celebrities are doing the same things that we are doing, which makes them feel more like friends instead of people we see on television. Plus, it’s always charming to learn that a successful actor or musician actually has a sense of humor.
1. Ezra Koenig (@arzE)
In the Twitterverse, Vampire Weekend frontman, Ezra Koenig, is no newcomer. In 2013 he caught everyone’s attention by publishing abstractly witty tweets. Koenig has recently tweeted often about the frenzy surrounding the concept of electronic “devices” and how the term is used as a generalization. He’s garnered just over 250,000 followers on twitter and has handfuls of Tumblrs devoted to him and his tweets.
2. Chrissy Teigen (@chrissyteigen)
Pacific Northwest native, Chrissy Teigen, has a lot going for her. She’s newly married to singer-songwriter John Legend, is featured on the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and has achieved the title as the “funniest model on Twitter.” Teigen is known for her blunt humor and calling out her followers, which is something that there seems to be a shortage of. She has 371,000 followers and her bio humbly professes, “Demotivational speaker / No cindy crawford / Aspiring magician”.
3. Edward Droste (@edroste)
Grizzly Bear frontman’s Instagram feed looks just like your mom’s, and he knows it. Okay, so maybe your mom doesn’t post as many photos of The Alps as he does, but his sunset photo count is pretty far up there. When he’s not on tour or working on other things, Droste spends time with his adorable dog in his Silverlake home (he tweets with his location on) or on some adventure in a foreign country. On social media terms, he’s the good friend from college who you’ll be secretly jealous of for the rest of your life.
Also, keep an eye out for his interactions with Ezra Koenig on Twitter, they’re highly entertaining.
4. Lena Dunham (@lenadunham)
The brilliant creator and star behind HBO’s series Girls is proving that her talents don’t stop at filmmaking. She recently revealed the cover of her book (out later this year) in an Instagram post. Dunaham’s Instagram feed constantly features her father (painter Carroll Dunhamn), her mother and sister (artist Laurie Simmons and Grace Dunham), and her boyfriend, Jack Antoff, the lead guitarist of Fun. On Twitter, Dunham is just as witty as her screenplays seem to be, and she’s been known to meaningfully spar with other celebrities (hint: Shia LeBouf).
5. Ireland Baldwin (@IrelandBBaldwin)
While her father, Alec Baldwin, has just announced that he’s retiring from public life, his 18-year-old daughter is doing the opposite. Last week, she professed that she was “never taking another selfie again.” So far, she’s stuck to her word, but her Instagram followers are a little disappointed. A model for IMG Worldwide, Baldwin seems to have everything going for her along with a sense of humor. Catch her as an Oscars Fashion Correspondent for the TV Guide Network.
