The “unofficial ambassadors” of the first Record Store day in 2008 had no idea that what they were doing would catch on. Six years later, the day is international celebrated on the third Saturday of April. This year’s Record Store Day falls on April 19.

The event has grown from having only ten special releases to boasting over 400 releases in 2011. Bands from Death Cab for Cutie to R.E.M have all released new material and reprints of albums to commemorate the holiday. The releases are made available at participating stores across the country. On the official website, you can search for stores near you, and even see if they plan on having your desired record in stock.

This year’s list of new releases features material from MGMT, CHVRCHES, Cut Copy, Mudhoney, The Orwells, and many more. Bombay Bicycle Club has also revealed that they are releasing a new track on the holiday. As was announced earlier, Jack White is planning on breaking the record (no pun intended) for the fastest vinyl record to be recorded, pressed, and sold on Record Store Day.

Jack White, former member of The White Stripes, was last year’s official ambassador for Record Store Day.

No matter where you are, make an effort to get to your local record store on April 19. You’re bound to have a good time, meet some great people, and perhaps you’ll even return home with a limited edition record.
