It’s hard to believe that A Very She & Him Christmas was released in the fall of 2011. Luckily, She & Him are giving listeners an album to listen to all year long.
She & Him, an indie two piece made of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, have released four albums. Classics being their fifth, is composed of covers of songs by Ella Fitzgerald, Dusty Springfield, Johnny Mathis, and many more.
The album’s singles, “Stars Fell On Alabama” and “Stay Awhile”, beg to question why Ward and Deschanel haven’t been covering golden oldies for their entire career. Ward’s instrumentation is warm and reverberated, with a slightly more crisp sound than those of the 1960s. Deschanel’s girlish crooning soars through the album; she was made for this.
This album will last throughout the seasons, with tracks to dance to (“Time After Time”), cry to (“I’ll Never Be Free”), and kiss to (“It’s Always You”). Its official release is December 2, on Columbia Records, but you can stream it on NPR Music this week.
